Paul is very generous with advice to beginners and often takes time to critique developing artists' work. When just starting out in the 1970's Paul was helped by the critiques of two professional artists and he is happy to do the same for others. He is often asked about formal classes or private tuition but unfortunately Paul is not available to teach class sessions at this time.

For a beginning or intermediate amateur painter, private tuition can sometimes be arranged at a mutually convenient time. This is done as a very full three-day block at Paul's studio in Queenstown, New Zealand. All equipment is supplied and at the end of the three days the participant should complete a painting to be proud of in a similar style to Paul's work. At least eight hours per day are taken up with tuition and guidance and Paul is involved the entire time. Noon and evening meals are provided with the artist and his family and accommodation can be arranged nearby. The price for the three-day painting experience is NZ$2900. (Local accommodation is not included.) This is really a 'saturation' course and stamina and will-power are definitely required for three days but the reward is a painting to be proud of and some techniques to help you repeat the process on your own.

Paul has found over the years that students often can produce a good painting while the tutor is present, however at the first attempt to paint on their own they come unstuck. Paul works to arm the students with the knowledge and ability to think through the difficulties and tackle a new project on their own.
